What is Homeopathy?
Finally understand what Homeopathy is about.
Homeopathy is a fully developed system of medicine (like Traditional Chinese Medicine, or Ayurveda) best known for leveraging the principle of 'like cures like,' or similia similibus curantur (for all you Latin lovers out there).
For example, if you cut onions, your nose and eyes often water and burn. Onions will cause these symptoms.
BUT -
If you develop watery eyes and nose from allergies, by taking a homeopathic dose of allium cepa (red onion), it may help alleviate those very symptoms that it can cause. Crazy, right?
OR CONSIDER THIS:
Syrup of Ipecac is given to induce vomiting. When Ipecac is given homeopathically, it may help alleviate overwhelming nausea and vomiting in a pregnant mom with morning sickness, for example, or someone with a bad stomach bug.
The thing is, it isn't just the similarity of the symptoms that makes homeopathy work.
YOU NEED THREE OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS:
- Minimum dose
- Consider each individual case
- Treat the totality of the disease
Let's start with #3
TREATING THE TOTALITY IS SIMPLE: ONE PERSON, ONE DISEASE PATTERN AT A TIME.
You know that phrase- the total isn't the sum of its parts?
It's like that- we aren't adding up a column of numbers, but looking for a cohesive pattern that reveals what's going on in your whole being. Homeopathy doesn't have specialties separating body systems or organs.
As a homeopath, I consider the pattern of all of your symptoms together and find one homeopathic remedy that will best match that pattern.
For example, after a head-injury, a person often experiences many symptoms: headaches, fatigue, impaired thinking, sometimes depression and unexplained crying. A remedy like natrum sulphuricum may address all of these symptoms together.
When you choose homeopathic treatment, you can be sure that you will be seen for your whole self and your whole history. How you came to be where you are, and how it all fits together. Rather than dealing your symptoms out to specialists like a deck of cards, Homeopathy brings you to wholeness.
#2 Consider each Individual Case
HAVE YOU EVER LOOKED AT A PHOTO OF A BIG FAMILY, AND MARVELED AT THE RESEMBLANCE BUT ALSO HOW EACH ONE IS STILL UNIQUE?
This is a great metaphor for how homeopathy considers the individual. Sure, 10 people who have arthritis will have symptoms in common. They're in the same 'family.' But as your homeopath, I'm going to get to know YOU: the one who has stiffness, but only in the cold; the one who feels it in her fingers, but not in her knees; the one who has weakness in the grip, but is still nimble.
These individual characteristics will help me identify a remedy.
With over 8,000 remedies in the homeopathic pharmacopeia, there are a lot of options.
And finally, #1 Minimum Dose
"Kill them with kindness", "That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger", "less is more",
"Poison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy."(Quote by Paracelsus)
From phrases in everyday language, to documented medical philosophy, the idea of 'dose' matters.
HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, discovered through decades of experimentation and practice that when a body is susceptible to a medicine, or a disease, the least amount is the most potent.
He gave this example- when you are healthy, how much chicken soup would you have to eat to feel sick to your stomach? 3 bowls? 5 bowls? A gallon?
If you have a stomach flu, how much would you have to eat to feel sick? The answer sometimes is none- just the smell alone may turn the stomach, or just the thought.
Likewise, exposure to influenza may be fleeting- but in a susceptible person, enough to cause illness. For someone else, they might tend to a sick person in their own home- and not fall ill.
It is no different with medicine. If it's the right medicine for you, a minimum dose is all that may be needed to stimulate the body to heal.
To summarize, what is Homeopathy?
- Like cures like
- Treating the individual
- Considering the totality
- And using a minimum dose
These are the four powerful principles of homeopathy that aim to restore health rapidly, gently, and permanently.
With over 225 years of clinical results and a growing body of research from the Homeopathic Research Institute and scientists around the world, homeopathy is well documented. It's the most widely used alternative medicine globally, and growing in popularity every day.
